Healthcare in Vietnam

Vietnam Healthcare at a Glance
Vietnam operates a two-tier system. Public hospitals are affordable but often overcrowded, with significant language barriers for expatriates. Most foreign nationals living here rely on private clinics and international hospitals for day-to-day care. The private hospital network in major cities is high-quality. Institutions like FV Hospital and Vinmec in Ho Chi Minh City, or Family Medical Practice and Hanoi French Hospital, are internationally accredited, feature English-speaking staff, and regularly cater to the expat community.

Key Private Hospitals
Tam Anh, FV Hospital, Vinmec Times City, and Hoan My Saigon are Vietnam's most expat-friendly private hospitals, internationally accredited with premium facilities and world-class specialist departments.
Why private insurance matters
A single hospitalisation at a private facility in Vietnam can easily run USD 2,000–USD 10,000+ without cover. To bypass the severe language barriers, crowds, and complex bureaucracy of the public system, most expats and professionals consider private health insurance essential, not optional.
Visa & insurance requirements
Vietnam visas do not explicitly mandate health insurance for professional passes (such as the work visa + temporary residence card).

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How do we choose the providers we work with?
Working with trustworthy health insurance providers is fundamental to our business. We work with both Hong Kong-based and international health insurance providers. For any offshore plans recommended, we ensure all providers are subject to regulations that both Alea and its customers hold in high regard.
How do you stay on top of their products?
We know our products from top to bottom! Alea advisors are not only rigorous and detail-oriented, they also receive weekly training sessions with the insurance providers we work with. We’re in constant conversation with our partners to stay abreast of any and all updates, keeping our communication mutually open and transparent.
Why does choice matter?
Providing choice is incredibly important for a number of reasons, including that your needs and personal situation may change over time. Maternity, child cover, planning for retirement, the onset of a chronic illness - we can't always plan for exactly how life will unfold. Additionally, some health insurance products may simply become too expensive over time.
How do we recommend one provider versus another?
There is no “best” insurer and there is no “one-size-fits-all” health insurance plan. Every product has its own strengths & weaknesses and because we know them all by heart (it's our specialty!), we know - for instance - which plans are more flexible on pre-existing conditions or which may be discontinued. Each proposal and recommendation is tailored to suit your own needs and situation.
Why do close relationships matter?
Trust is pivotal to our business and we maintain close relationships with each of our 25+ providers, working with them hand-in-hand to make sure you receive the best service and outcomes. These relationships mean we can better advocate for you when you are facing a difficult claim issue. Our multiple points of contact enable us to resolve any critical issues that may arise.
Have we ever stopped working with a provider?
Absolutely. We’ve ceased relationships with insurance providers whose products we believed to be unsustainable and with some who’ve made business decisions we felt were unfair and/or unfavourable to our clients. When making such decisions, we carefully analyse facts and data and undertake robust internal consideration.
How do we stay independent?
The Code of Conduct For Licensed Insurance Brokers specifically mentions that our fiduciary duties are owed to clients. While there are insurance providers we work with more than others, no one partner represents more than 20% of our total revenues. We partner with 25+ insurance providers, allowing us to provide choice and remain completely independent. We don’t work for insurance providers, we work for you.
What is our business model?
As brokers, we receive a percentage commission of the insurance premium you pay directly to the insurance provider. This commission is automatically included in the premium, not in addition to it. It is not less expensive to buy direct from the insurer! The advisory services we provide to you are free of charge. For individual and family plans, the average commission rate we receive each year varies between 15-20% of the annual premium. For group employee health benefits (group schemes), commission rates generally vary between 10-15%.
